This week we were asked to consider the potential and power of mobile learning in the classroom. The 2011 Horizon report (K-12 version) recognizes that technologies (such as mobile phones) have a great effect on teaching and learning. They state
“Mobiles are a category that defies long-term definitions. With more than 1.2 billion new mobile devices produced each year, the pace of innovation in the mobile markets is unprecedented. Mobiles, especially smartphones and tablets, enable ubiquitous access to information, social Networks, tools for learning and productivity, and hundreds of thousands of custom applications. Mobiles were listed in previous years because they could capture multimedia, access the Internet, or geolocate. Now they are effectively specialized computers for the palm of your hand, with a huge and growing collection of software tools that make use of their accelerometers, compasses, cameras, microphones, GPS, and other sensors.” (The NMC Horizon Report: 2011 K-12 Edition, p. 6)

Throughout the research process of, iPod, iPhone and iPad use in the classroom, you can see the value in each of these devices and clearly we can all see the value in Apple technologies, holding the many great applications for educational purposes. So this took me to my next discussion. Why not link Apple technologies to interactive whiteboards (smartboards) in the classroom? After much research I came across a teacher’s forum that was discussing this very topic. I found this forum really interesting plus discovered many helpful hints on how to make these Apple technologies more collaborative rather than each student retaining their own.
Unfortunately linking your Apple technology or any other mobile device to an interactive white board is still out of reach but wouldn’t it be great if Apple could bring out their own smart board for classroom use…BUT WHO KNOWS WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR TECHNOLOGY?
